RE: Glacier Camping

I was up in Glacier this month - you need to find MTLogger. The really primitive sites are at Kintla & Bowman Lakes - far back in the woods.

RE: Boat Guys and Gals And Any Interested Wishers

I built my first wood strip boat when I was 12 with help from my Grandfather. I still have that boat along with four others that I've built over the past 40 years. First one had 5 Johnson on it and others since 9.9 and 28 Johnsons, which we've lovingly maintained. If you want to buy a good old motor find a circa 1940-50 Johnson or Evinrude. Those engines were built strong.

It was mentioned last week that the Dodge Ram has $8,000 worth of profit built into each unit.

RE: Looking for cots

I use military surplus cots - wood will support 250# no problem. New one's even more weight. Try www.sportsmansguide.com

RE: 4 person 3 season tent

Look for a 10 square tent - whatever brand you like. You get plenty of headroom, and a good floor. Enough room to sleep a squad.

Do not put on trains That part is hilarious. It's how we get our goods and supplies!

RE: Liquid Gas vs. Propane

It's illegal to refill propane canisters and transport them. I don't know about it being illegal to refill the small canisters, but it sure is a pain in the butt.

RE: Liquid Gas vs. Propane

I grew up with White Gas and still use it from time to time. I think most went to LP and Butane in the mid-80's when it was more available and easier to handle than the red cans. The cost has not gone up that much. I found an old can, rusted of course that still had the $3 price tag on it and I found a new can the other day $4. But it is the consistency of the fuel and the higher BTU's that keeps me using it.

RE: Best season for tent camping

I prefer the Fall, when the bugs and the tourists are gone. But, bring a rainfly - it could snow.

RE: Tarp tents

In Northern Manitoba we use tarp tents extensively. They are cheap, light weight, easy to put up/take down and efficient. My tarps are 5m x 7m and you can sleep six people under them in sleeping bags. Headnets are used to solve the bug problem. Tent pegs hold the corners down to prevent wind from blowing up underneath.

RE: To Be Armed or Not

I think all you yanks are a bit crazy - just because your Constitution says you can have one. I can't remember reading or hearing about the last time we had a gun crime in my area. That's because 95% of our crimes are with knives and/or poison. Seems all those "firearms crimes" are in Toronto, Winnipeg and Montreal where there is easy access to the States. Thankfully we are closing the loopholes that allow that importation. No I don't lock my doors, never have, never will - don't need to. No bars on the windows, no razor wire on the fencetops, no need for a personal defence firearm. Have phone service. Most LEO's in our area respond within a half-hour to crimes and have subjects in custody within a day or two. Rarely more than a week. Now, I've been to Mexico, all of Central and South America and have never been hassled, or had a problem or been held up at knife or gunpoint. Maybe I'm lucky or maybe I don't shoot off my mouth about how wealthy I am. Keeping a low profile helps. You in the USofA can have your firearms if it makes you feel safer - more power to you. Leave them at home when you come to the North country - you won't need them. G*D forbid you should get caught with them here.

RE: To Be Armed or Not

To me it's ridiculous question. Being a native Canadian, I won't carry, nor do I ever want to. My only dangers are bears, moose and the occasional wolf - I carry a large machete - very sharp. Travelling around North and Central America very much over the last 20 years - law enforcement is only a phone call away. Give up my truck and wallet - sure, it's replaceable - my life isn't.

RE: ICE

Since there is no coldplate on my sailboat, this is what I discovered last winter in Mexico: a)solid blocks of ice last the longest; b)water bottles with pure water frozen ahead of time last second longest; c)newspaper wetted with saltwater (or Solar salt crystals put on top of)last 3rd longest Someone said to use dry ice. If not packed properly it will freezer burn all your food - not a good choice. Fine if in a hurricane situation with a 21cuft freezer.

RE: motor oil

I just returned from overseas where dino oil sells for more than synthetics. Synthetics are in just about every vehicle sold as OEM. My friend's BMW has a recommended interval of 24,140km btwn oil changes. I just purchased a Toyota Pre-Runner and it came with synthetic oil.

RE: Info about Ford's new Scorpion Diesel

Sorry I disagree, Chrysler can go from drawing board to production in less then 3 years. In Europe the Dodge Caliber gets a diesel engine that makes 60 MPG or so I was told it is more our Government and the EPA regs here that are killing us. Do you really think the Feds what to see fuel mileage go up, that would be less taxes they collect and we know that’s not going to happen. Got or gas bill (natural gas for the house) and our budget went form $106.00 a month to $158.00 a month! Don’t see any end to this anytime to soon. Don In EU - Chrysler has a half dozen models that are only available with diesel engines and they sell everything they can mfgr. Your EPA is filled with tree and bunny huggers since Jimmy Carter was President. They are retiring now with fat pension checks and the next generation has filled their shoes. Does your govt want vehicles to get better mileage? I doubt it. They want you to move back into the inner cities, take public transportation and live the way they want you to live. Mind you Carter was the President who installed solar panels on the roof of the White House. IMHO - He was and still is the only responsible adult in that position of authority. Remember the 55/65 limits - why not now? Btw Reagan was President one week when he had the panels dismantled and removed. In Central America, where gasoline sold for $5.60/gal this month, people are converting to LP gas which sells for half that amount. So it doesn't get good mileage - but for half the cost, it's worth converting.

RE: Info about Ford's new Scorpion Diesel

The truck/engine combinations the big 3 are putting out now get GREAT MPG, heads and shoulders above the combinations they put out just 5 years ago. Sorry, but in the area of Diesel engines, this is false. The current Dodge/Cummins can't even compare to the more fuel efficient Dodge/Cummins engines of the mid 90s to early 2000s. Sure they are more powerful, but many of us miss the days of a diesel pickup getting 20 mpg or more on the highway. Never have understood the obsession with horsepower and torque. My old 89 Dodge diesel got better mileage than anything they've built since. I got 23mpg on open highway - and we have lots of that here. 18 towing the Airstream.

I'm buying a Pre-Runner now, since I got back home. I figure it will outlast all my other vehicles and I'll be money ahead at 1.09/ltr
